Below is an article on Essential Fatty Acids, what they are and some of their role in maintaining the health of the human body.  Recognizing that you may not have time to read the entire article, here is a reference and here is an online source for your convenience.  Note: Essential Fatty Acids can be derived from oils such as flax seed oil which is available at your local health food store.

Essential Fatty Acid

Your body truly needs omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids to survive. They are both considered 'essential' because the body must get them from a food source. In other words, the body cannot produce them on its own as it can with other nutrients.

You can consider these the good kind of fat. You can even refer to them as friendly fat. :)  They can actually help you to lose weight.  In addition they can help your body to form healthy skin and nails and they help to keep your hormones regulated.  They may also provide protection for the nervous system by providing building blocks for your myelin sheaths that enshroud and protect a good part of your nervous system.

Definition for myelin from dictionary.com :  A white fatty material, composed chiefly of lipids and lipoproteins, that encloses certain axons and nerve fibers. Also called medulla.
